Priority 03 of 04

A place people invest in

Our doors should be open to people who want to invest here. We need to work with them directly and cut out as much unnecessary red tape as we can.

The mill era shaped us. Our next chapter needs room to grow.

My position

Help people get work started at the mill site.

The mill site is one place where we need to get this right. People looking to use existing buildings or put up new ones need to know what they are facing. We should be working through that with them early and bringing the right City departments into the conversation.

For example, I want us to look at where the City can rely on plans signed off by a qualified engineer, within the rules that apply. If that work can satisfy a requirement and save unnecessary delay, we should use it. The aim is to make investment easier while making sure the work meets the standards.

01

Open the door early

Give people clear requirements at the beginning. Bring planning, engineering and economic development together so someone trying to start a project knows who to talk to and what needs to happen next.

02

Work through the hold-ups

I want us working directly with people who are prepared to invest. If a project is being held up, find out why and what can be done about it. That matters at the mill site, and it matters to a local business trying to build or expand.

03

Build lasting local value

I want investment that creates work and opportunity for people here. That means working with Tla’amin, employers, local trades, training programs and suppliers, and helping people see a future for themselves in Powell River.

We need to work with people, get our departments talking and make investment easier. I want people to know our doors are open.
